Let's take a moment to talk about how experience and levelling works within the Reach:

Experience Points:

The Aria of Stars campaign uses XP points for levelling, and specifically does not use milestones. Players will gain experience for various activities, and when their xp total equals or exceeds the amount of XP required, they will advance to the next level. Experience is awarded on an ongoing basis throughout each adventure and activity, and each XP award is announced as it is awarded.

You can gain experience for the following actions:

Roleplay:

XP is awarded for roleplaying your character for activities including but not limited to:

  • Significant decisions influenced by race, class, background, personality, ideals, traits, flaws, or other character elements.
  • Significant decisions influenced by existing or past relationships with your party.
  • Learn or teach lore or knowledge that is believed to be true and significant - have a conversation about what you know in-character!
  • You experience a true slice of life for the professional adventurer and take it in-character, for good or ill.
  • You make a decision that affects the entire player roster, the Reach, or an entire faction.

Discovery:

Xp is awarded for a host of different discoveries, including but not limited to:

  • Entering a new region (per character, for the first time)
  • Uncovering knowledge for each region - ranging from the kinds of animals there are to significant structures, NPCs, or Factions.
  • Meeting the leader of a faction
  • Delving into a dungeon for the first time (with extra if you're the first party to visit!)
  • Discovery of an artifact
  • Discovery of story elements

Additional experience is awarded for sharing your discovery to the other players through the Discord, writings, journals, or other creative work.

Challenges:

Participating in challenges - finding secret doors, persuading townsfolk to some course of activity, finding and overcoming traps, or other major skill feats - will be awarded with experience.

Combat:

Combat experience is awarded upon the completion of a combat encounter - whether through violent or nonviolent means; this is split between all characters in the party who participate in that encounter. Additional experience can and will be awarded for making combat exciting, engaging, and cinematic.

Quests:

Achieving personal or global objectives - whether publically known or private to your character - and accomplishing the party mission will be awarded with experience.

Levelling Up:

Levelling up occurs ONLY when back in Landfall. Even if XP awards indicate an additional level 'while in the field', that can't be realized without time for reflection, study and practice. Go home to level up!
